3 Interesting Facts About The Asian Lady Beetle

From spiders and rodents to centipedes and cockroaches, seeing any type of pest in the home can be frightening. You probably already understand the dangers of some pests, but preventing other types of bugs and insects from your home is also important. While surprising, certain types of ladybugs can become a nuisance. With this guide, you will learn a few interesting facts about the Asian lady beetle bug.

They Look the Same, Yet Different

When you see a traditional ladybug, you may not give it much thought. As a matter of fact, many people believe ladybugs are symbols of good luck. However, an Asian ladybug, or beetle, in the home should cause some concern. Even though it is difficult, you can spot the difference between traditional ladybugs and Asian lady beetles.

One key difference is that the Asian lady beetle has a white marking behind its head. These white markings cause the black area on the head to resemble the letter, M.

They Bite, but Only In Defense

Asian lady beetles are very aggressive. Their entire purpose is to attack pests in your garden, which can be helpful. Unfortunately, these unique beetles can also attack you.

When you are working in your garden or conducting some landscaping around your home, one of these beetles may land on and bite your skin. You may experience slight swelling and redness around the bite mark. Many people do not even realize they have been bitten until this swelling and redness occurs.

In some instances, a bite can trigger an allergic reaction. If you experience coughing, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the throat, seek out immediate medical care.

Touching your eye after making contact with an Asian lady beetle is also troubling. Many people develop inflammation and irritation of the eye, which is similar to conjunctivitis. Again, visit your doctor.

Prevention Is Possible

Now that you know what these bugs are capable of, you will want to prevent them from in and around your home. Thankfully, prevention is possible.

Seal any cracks and holes in your home's foundation. Make sure all doors, windows, and screens are sealed tightly, as well.

Consider spraying the perimeter of your home with a pesticide, which not only reduces the risk of an Asian lady beetle infestation, but protects your home from a variety of other pests, too.

When working in your yard, wear gloves at all times to prevent bites from Asian lady beetles. Avoid touching your face and eyes if you do make contact while wearing your gloves.

The Asian lady beetle may not be a common nuisance, but it does deserve understanding. To learn more about preventing these beetles and other bugs, contact a pest professional today, such as from Godfather's Exterminating, Inc.
